Old Testament Prophets, New Testament Prophets

I have just started a study on the New Testament gift of prophecy based on the book The Gift of Prophecy by Wayne Grudem.  We began our Wednesday night study with a look at the role of the prophet in the Old Testament.  The OT prophet was a messenger of God who spoke the very words of God.  His words were authoritative and disobedience to the message of the prophet was disobedience to God.

Many people today misunderstand the NT gift of prophecy because they connect it to the role of  OT prophets like Moses, Samuel and Isaiah.  But the NT counterpart to an OT prophet is not a prophet, but an apostle.  In the NT it was the apostles who spoke the very words of God with divine authority.
